About Joy Baca Gutierrez

Joy, a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, comes from a rich musical legacy that has shaped both her career and her faith. Her great-grandfather, Prospero Baca, a Spanish folk poet and musician, had a profound influence on New Mexican culture, with his contributions to folk music featured in New Mexico Magazine in 1966. Her father, Phil Baca, followed in his footsteps, becoming a multi-instrumentalist, worship leader, and eventually a recording studio owner. Growing up surrounded by music, particularly Christian worship, Joy’s musical foundation was deeply rooted in both her family's traditions and her faith.

From a very young age, Joy’s father was her greatest influence, teaching her to sing and even recording her first song in his studio. By the age of five, she was already singing publicly in church, and by twelve, she was performing at weddings and singing in local bands. Her musical development also included learning to sing in Spanish from her grandmother, and she later became an award-winning vocalist and songwriter. Known for her work in Tejano music with The Band Crossroads, Joy toured extensively across the Southwest United States, establishing herself as a prominent figure in the music scene.

However, after the birth of her daughter, Joy’s life took a significant turn. Rediscovering her faith in Christ, she chose to step away from the music industry to focus on her family, pursue her education, and explore new ventures in business. Raised in a tight-knit family where love and marriage were exemplified by her high school sweetheart parents, Joy also found a deep connection with her husband, Matthew. Their shared love for music became the foundation of their bond, and together they raised their daughter while continuing to make music. Matthew was not only her husband but her best friend, and they cherished their time together making music and building their family life.

Tragically, in 2023, Matthew passed away unexpectedly, leaving Joy devastated. In the face of this loss, her family remained a pillar of strength, offering her the support she needed to carry on. Despite the grief, Joy found the courage to return to the music studio in 2025, with her family's encouragement, to complete the music projects she had begun with Matthew. She teamed up with her father and Grammy Award-winning producer Gilbert Velasquez of Velasquez Music to finish and release these final pieces of music, honoring Matthew’s legacy as a musician, music director, producer, and graphic designer.
