In 2019, Joy received a medical diagnosis that would forever change her life. While recording new music, she noticed something was off with her voice, which led to the diagnosis. The news was completely unexpected, and it forced her to face the uncertain reality that she might never sing again. But through this challenging moment, Joy turned to her faith more deeply than ever before. Her relationship with God, which had been rekindled years earlier when she became a mother, became the steady foundation she relied on during this time of uncertainty.
Amidst the uncertainty of her health, in 2020, Joy auditioned for the worship team at her church, eager to serve as a vocalist. She had no idea that her first annual check-up would coincide with this decision. When she received the news that she was cancer-free, it was a moment of pure joy and gratitude. Singing, she realized, was no longer just a passion, it was a way to glorify God. From that moment on, she served as a worship leader for her church for three years and also sang at her daughter’s Christian school, pouring her heart into worship.
By 2023, Joy felt compelled to share her journey and raise awareness for thyroid cancer. She worked with a cinematographer to document her story, intending to release it for Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month. However, the emotional weight of reliving the experience, combined with the grief of her husband’s unexpected passing that same year, led her to postpone the release. In the midst of this personal tragedy, Joy felt a renewed sense of purpose and, in 2024, decided to share her story as a testimony of God's goodness—both through her cancer journey and her faith, and to honor her late husband's legacy.
In 2025, Joy was invited to share her testimony at a local church, a moment that would mark the first time she publicly opened up about her husband’s passing, her musical journey, and how her faith had grown like never before. It was an emotional and healing experience, as Joy reflected on how God had carried her through some of the most challenging seasons of her life.
